visvim Spring/Summer 2010 Kiefer Jo Hi

Wearing sneakers without socks may look cool but one’s feet are often far from cool in this scenario. However uncomfortable going commando in sneakers may be, no one wants to wander around in scrunchy calf-length socks like awkward pubescent boys from indie movies. visvim renders the perfect solution for this sartorial dilemma by crafting its Kiefer Jo-Hi sneaker from an interesting silk suede blend that is amazingly soft and ventilated. The light silk suede is highly breathable and conforms to the wearer’s feet like a good pair of socks. These hi-top sneakers are reminiscent of Converse Chuck Taylor All Star and come in various spring happy shades such as green, powder blue and red. As for men who like to keep their sneakers simple and classic, there are also tan and black colorways. Aside from an embossed leather patch heel detail and a rubber logo tag on the soles, the shoes are unadorned in true visvim tradition. Wear them with top rolled down (because they are soft enough to be cuffed down), with shorts and forgo socks. Thanks to visvim, sporting sneakers in the summer does not have to be a tedious, sweltering ordeal anymore. These are now available via Japan’s NOS and select visvim retailers.

Lil Wayne’s Life in Jail

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Lil Wayne & Young Money

As of Monday, rapper Lil Wayne has a new moniker: Inmate Carter.

The platinum-selling artist (real name: Dwayne Michael Carter Jr.), who began his yearlong jail sentence for gun possession on Monday, is facing a lot of new circumstances these days.

The rapper is living among the general population of inmates at the Eric. M. Taylor Center (the facility for sentenced males at Riker’s Island), but he is also afforded a low level of protective custody, due to his public profile.

Inmate Carter is in a category of housing that we call ‘general population/escort,’ ” a New York City Department of Corrections official tells PEOPLE. That means when he leaves the housing area (his cell or the day room), he will have a captain escorting him at all times.

On an hourly basis, Lil Wayne can decide if he wants to be locked in his cell or locked out of it – for security reasons, inmates are not allowed to freely move between their cell and the common areas.

What else can Lil Wayne expect from the year ahead? The official shared the following details:

• The Day Room
In this common area, which he shares with 19 other inmates, Lil Wayne can watch television, play cards, read the paper or just socialize. Since the day room is within the housing area, he does not have an escort here.

• The Meals
Breakfast is served at 4:30 a.m. Since a number of inmates will be going to court on any given day, the morning starts early for Riker’s residents. Lunch is served at 11, dinner at 4:30 p.m.

• The Clothes

Lil Wayne will wear the standard institutional clothing: Green work shirt and pants, slip-on style sneakers.

• The Cell
His six-by-ten space features a steel cot connected to the wall, a mattress, a sheet, a blanket and a pillow. There’s a sink and toilet in the cell as well, plus his personal property which includes the standard cup, razor, toothbrush and soap assigned to each inmate.

• Outside the Housing Area
With his escort, Lil Wayne can leave the housing area for attorney visits, regular visits (he’ll get two per week with up to three visitors), religious services or jail-offered programs such as one that helps inmates transition back into society. While some inmates have work assignments in and around the jail, he will not because, “then you’d have to send somebody off to escort him every day,” says the official.

• Recreation
One hour per day. The rapper’s facility features outdoor basketball courts.

• The Commissary
Weezy can buy snacks and toiletries from his Commissary account, which friends and family can contribute to online. Reports that he’ll have an ipod are untrue, though he can purchase a battery-operated AM/FM radio and earphones to listen to music.
People

I’m gonna take a wild guess that Lil Wayne bought a radio so that he can listen to new music on the airwaves. What do you think? Leave your thoughts and comments below.

Lil Wayne’s First Day In Jail

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Lil Wayne

So far the prisoners love Lil Wayne. He’s a celebrated star and they dig his image, his work ethic, his music. There’s a lot of hype surrounding the fact the he’s not in protective custody (PC), but in general population. But it’s not really a big thing. In prison, they treat all inmates like the next. He does have limited protection, meaning there is someone that stays with him at all times. But because of who he is, this is also the norm. There hasn’t been much activity with Lil Wayne, especially since he’s busy undergoing the processing an inmate goes through immediately upon his incarceration. Paperwork, tests, all that. Tomorrow, they’ll be conducting DNA testing, specifically because his case centers around DNA evidence. The only thing out of the norm is the amount of calls the prison has been receiving from Weezy’s people, hounding them with questions about whether he’ll be forced to cut his hair, and a few weeks ago, what would the situation be with him having all them carats in his mouth (I think that’s why they opted to have that emergency dental procedure). Still, like I said before, in Rikers, they’re not concerned with one’s celebrity status.

A couple of guards have been written up, only because they’ve acted like fans, having more personal interaction with Lil Wayne than is procedure, prolly acting all star struck, which, once again, the system does it’s best to discourage. Me getting this info and writing about it here puts my contact at risk of losing her job. Still, we do this for our culture. For the most part though, Weezy has been pretty quiet, staying mostly inside his jail cell. There doesn’t seem to be anyone, any faction trying to get at him in any harmful way, because he’s new and because he hasn’t violated any of the codes customary to inmate living the prison life. As I was told, it’s too early to determine how the rest of his experience will be, but so far, so good. It’s all in Lil Wayne’s hands.iHH

I wonder if Weezy is just thinking up music in his head or what. Leave a comment below!

Phil Spector: Phil Spector Launches Appeal Against Murder Conviction

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Phil Spector isn’t going to take his jail sentence without a fight, and has filed an appeal against his conviction for murder on the grounds of judicial error and prosecutorial misconduct. The legendary producer is currently serving a 19-years-to-life sentence for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson.

Spector’s lawyers don’t think he got a fair trial, and are alleging that five women were “improperly used” during the case. All five women claimed Spector had used a gun against them in the past, but his lawyers think that the incidents were not comparable to the circumstances of Clarkson’s death.

"None of the... evidence involved events in which Mr Spector put a gun in someone's mouth, much less fired it,” reads a statement connected to the appeal. The lawyers reject the notion that Spector "had a history and propensity of violence against women and thus should be convicted based on his bad character and evil propensities.”

Spector also famously pulled a gun on the Ramones during recording sessions with the group, allegedly forcing them to play "Baby I Love You” over and over while brandishing the weapon at them. It’s unlikely that widespread knowledge of such incidents helped Spector out, and it’s not hard to see him staying in jail for a long time yet.

James Brown: James Brown’s Daughter Claims His Body Has Been Stolen

Friday, March 12th, 2010

James Brown passed away in 2006, but he’s causing plenty of trouble from beyond the grave. Perhaps it’s unsurprising that the self-styled Godfather of Soul is enduring a problematic afterlife, but this story is unusual even in the annals of music history—according to his daughter, LaRhonda Pettit, his body has allegedly been stolen.

Brown was put in a crypt on Christmas Day in 2006, but his daughter Deanna has apparently been keeping hold of the body in her house (yes, really) while a mausoleum was being prepared. Pettit wants to do a full autopsy to discover how Brown died, but she is claiming that the body has gone missing.

"My daddy's body has disappeared. I have no clue where it was taken, but I need to know where," she said. "I'm convinced his death was suspicious and I want the people responsible brought to justice. The only way to do that is to exhume his body and have an autopsy.” One thing’s for sure—Brown’s body must certainly be “funky” by now.
